There are technologies exist to produce homogeneous, flat light. Each method has its own advantages and disadvantages and depends on the individual user requirements and budget needs. For example LED panels from our standard series use sidelight technology. Unlike backlight panels, the LEDs are not spread over the entire panel surface, but are located on the side of the aluminum frame of the luminaire. Depending on the model and version, only one, two or all four sides are equipped with LED stripes. What all edgelit or sidelight panels have in common is that the LEDs shine into the center of the panel.The light must therefore still be redirected in order to radiate downwards. The most important element here is the light guide plate. This is usually made of acrylic glass [also PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate), a transparent thermoplastic material], which distributes the light evenly over the entire surface and deflects it downwards. In addition, acrylic glass does not yellow with age. In addition to the light guide plate, which deflects the light by means of small laser-engraved dots, the additional reflector, similar to the one the backlight panel, and the diffuser also contribute to the significantly more complex structure of a sidelight panel [see picture to the right]. The great advantage is the lower construction thickness, which is why edgelit panels can be integrated more discreetly in rooms and are better suited as pendant variants. At the same time, the panels allow a higher beam angle [approx. 120°] what results in a larger illuminated area.
